If you've read enough of my book reviews you'll know. I don't read vampire stories. I just don't. Vampires are not my thing.

In May I attended the Creative Writing Institute at Florida Institute of Technology and I took a class from Susan Hubbard. She was positively amazing as a professor and as a person. I learned so much from her in a very short period of time. The entire class had fun together. It was an awesome experience.

I downloaded The Society of S onto my Kindle. The thought that keeps coming to my mind to describe this book is, "It had me at hello!"

Ariella lived a sheltered life, home schooled by a reclusive father. He has sheltered her for a reason known only to him as an adult vampire. As she begins to develop as a teenager and is given a taste of the outside world, she begins to question her unusual life. Her mother disappeared when she was born and her father finally reveals his story to her. After the death of her only friend, Kathleen, Ari sets off to search for her mother. On the road she discovers her taste for blood and struggles to come to terms with the morals she's been taught by her father and her physical desires as a vampire.

I loved this book. Susan is a wonderful storyteller using beautiful, descriptive prose. The characters are rich and real. A good portion of this book is set in Florida and I swear I saw a Green Cross truck make a delivery down the street just the other day. The lesson learned here is to keep an open mind and read a variety of genres. You just might find a treasure like The Society of S.

The thoughtful, unique descriptions and surprising plot twists stayed with me after reading- I wish I could visit Ari's houses!!! I definitely recommend this book- I stayed up late to finish it and can't wait to read the next one in the series!!!!
If the Twilight series was your gateway to vampire fiction, then you can expect a meatier, more intriguing and mysterious story here. After a rather shocking event early on in the book, I knew this was not going to be typical young adult fare. It is more of a coming of age story in general than a fixation on traditional vampire lore, with Vampirism as more of a subtext. I appreciated this book more after reading the sequal, The Year of Disappearances. Taken both together, the author creates a wonderful and complex world that I hope there will be more of.
Ariella Montero thinks she's just like any other 13 year old. She is home schooled, vegetarian, limited contact with outsiders, and her main learning about life comes from her father Raphael, and his assistant Dennis. They have a housekeeper who comes in to cook - she's not that great, but she sees that Ariella needs some contact with kids around her own age. She takes Ariella to her house and she finds there is another world out there - she makes friends and brings into her life questions about her own home life - she finds her father is a vampire - and her mother, who left just after giving birth to Ariella was a mortal. Ariella may well be a vampire or a mortal - that has not been determined. Ariella leaves home in search of her mother, to find out why she left and to find answers of what Ariella is part of.

Hubbard shows us the lives of modern day vampires - while a good bite on the neck is good, the more civilized way of sustaining life is through breakthrough technology of supplements and tonics. They can eat, walk in the light (with sunscreen), and integrate themselves in the mainstream of life. There are radicals and there are folks like The Society of S, where vampires can, without conflict, be themselves and not be the subject of fear from humans.

Very heady information for a 13 year old girl discovering herself and her identity. It is a well written book that weaves you through lives of primarily Ariella, but through her family, friends, and 'wannabe vampires' role playing not knowing what that reality really is.

Will be interesting if a sequel is written where it takes Ariella and her family.

A good read.
First, I'd like to say that I love fantasy books--especially dark fantasy, and especially vampires and werewolves. However, I'm not a fan of most books featuring these particular creatures of the night for the simple fact that they tend to be poorly written, cliche, and have inferior characters. Because I crave well-written, character-driven stories, I lean more heavily towards both new and classic literature.

But the Society of S is a different vampire novel. It's a literary novel, with deep, fascinating characters that I came to love (or hate, or fear, in some cases) and rich themes that left more for me to think about than how hot X character is.
The characters were, for me, the pinnacle of this book astonishingly life-like, distinct, original, fascinating, complex... You'll find no two-dimensional characters in this book.

The plot, while slower and less "wild" than the average dark fantasy reader might expect, is also very well crafted, especially as the book moves on. It was exciting to gradually discover the novel's vampires with the protagonist at the start of the book, and once brought to light, thrilling to learn about their lifestyles, factions, and of course, see characters use their abilities.

My only slight criticism is that the book could have introduced the main antagonist and central conflict sooner, and streamlined less relevant parts, but the slow pace worked just fine for me, and at no point did I find the book boring. There is also something to be said about the monotony of the protagonist's early life; in order to accurately capture it, it had to be conveyed on page.

Every other aspect of this book is so well done, from the gorgeous, authentic descriptions of people and places, to the excellent pacing, to the entertaining retrospective viewpoint the book is written from.

If you love vampire novels, intelligent and well-crafted writing, and complex, fascinating characters, you should read this book. I can confidently say, that of all the vampire books I have read, this is easily my favorite.
