It Always Something Gilda Radner 9780380813223 Books

In 1989, at the age of 15, my family and I moved away from the only home I had ever known and - while it seems almost silly now almost 30 years later - it was devastatingly traumatic to me. My mom had even more on her plate at the time - her two sisters were both dealing with cancer scares. I am sure that is where she had heard of this book, and saw it as not only being a book about battling cancer but also a book simply about battling hardship. So she checked the book out of the library for me in the hopes that it would help guide me through my pain.

I read the short blurb at the beginning of the book - the Buddhist parable of the man being chased by a tiger and hanging off the cliff by a rope ready to give way. But I wasn’t much of a reader at the time and the book needed to be returned. Interestingly, that little Buddhist parable changed my life - not immediately, but slowly, over decades. I decided recently to re-visit this book as an homage to the path to which it led me. I don’t have cancer, nor is anyone close to me currently suffering from it. But as it turns out, my Mom was right - this book isn’t just about battling cancer. It is about battling hardship - with compassion, humor, humility and most of all, humanity. Oh yeah, and it is also about one hell of a beautiful person.

It Always Something Gilda Radner 9780380813223 Books Reviews

I love this book. I love Gilda Radner (and Gene Wilder), and her book is better than I ever even anticipated it could be (and I expected it to be good). In the midst of horrible things going on in her life, she has you laughing out loud. I literally could not put the book down. She has a way of writing so that you feel like she is talking to you. Her example and words are so uplifting and inspiring. I am so thankful that she put her thoughts and experiences in writing so others can benefit from them.
If you recall Gilda on SNL, or if you didn't, you'll love to read her book. It is both touching and heartfelt.
It tells her life story with many photos, including her early comedy days, her courtship and
marriage to Gene Wilder, their travels and life together. But there is a very serious side to this
book that is her delayed diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Since I was treated for the same disease, it
particularly interested me...and I highly recommend Gilda's written journey with ovarian cancer; a disease often not found
until it is very advanced and difficult to treat. Women everywhere should applaud Gilda's strength and bravery
as she went through treatments in the 1980's for ovarian cancer, and although she did not survive it,
her story is one that is helpful to all of us. Her husband Gene Wilder stayed by her side and along with her
friends and little doggie provided her with much love and compassion. Gilda & Gene used comedy and their sense
of humor to cope with cancer and I really applaud them for that.
It's Always Something is recommended for everyone. I thank Gilda (and Gene) for telling her story which touched
me very greatly.
For many years I have wanted to read this book simply because of its title. It’s Always Something is a phrase that comes to my mind during life changing, difficult times. It tends to minimize the impact of the moment and make life doable. The book is a beautiful memoir of the extreme emotions (both positive and negative) of Gilda Radner during her war against the enemy of cancer. She goes through her various types of treatments; she becomes ebullient over one and then deeply discourage with it and then tries another and goes through the same cycle. The end of this new addition is a handbook about Gilda’s Club, giving cancer sufferers some clues on how to fight the disease. It is written by Gilda’s psychological counselor. I will keep it in mind if I ever need it. I am glad I read the book and highly recommend it.

I've been asking for a kindle version of this for years. I read it in actual hard book form when it first came out and it made a huge impression on me. I came to know and love Gilda's work on Saturday Night Live (the early ones are still the best, I believe!) and I can still see her doing one of her recurring characters, Roseanne Roseannadanna.

She was misdiagnosed for a long time before finally getting the awful diagnoses of ovarian cancer. While the book talks about this, it is her humor and honesty that shines through! She tried everything that was available at the time , proven and non-proven, to overcome her disease, but in the end the disease proved stronger than her will to live.

The interaction with her husband, Gene Wilder, and their love for each other shines through on every page. He stood by her and cheered her on at every turn. In the end, her lasting contribution to women all over is the awareness of the symptoms of this disease and Gilda's Clubs Worldwide.
