An Inquiry Into Love and Death Simone St James Books

Well, I enjoyed Ms. St. James' debut novel 'The Haunting of Maddy Clare' but I have to admit that this, her second try, was even better! The story takes place in England during the autumn of 1924 and is told in the first person by the heroine, Jillian Leigh. After her uncle Toby, a renowned ghost hunter is killed from a fall off a cliff, Jillian must go to the small haunted town of Rothewell to identify the body and collect his belongings. There she meets and falls in love with Drew Merriken, the sexy Scotland Yard inspector investigating Toby's death. During her brief but life-altering stay she'll make friends, encounter ghosts, uncover family secrets, small town deceits, and fight for her life. By the end Jillian will question who she is and what she's always believed about herself and the world around her...

First off, I absolutely loved Jillian who did seem a bit cold and unfeeling in the beginning, but I watched grow as a person. I respected and was impressed by her intelligence, bravery, and compassion. Drew was a ladies man with some hangups he still has from his time in the war, but I liked him and thought he was a good guy. Although there is a romance, this story is first and foremost a mystery with moments of chilling fear and creepiness. Walking John, the local ghost, truly freaked me out a time or two. It was also insightful and made me think about war and the effects they have on those who serve in them. There were plenty of surprises and twists along the way and at one pivotal point had me near tears. In the end it was an intense, complex, and suspenseful read I'd definitely recommend.

An Inquiry Into Love and Death Simone St James Books Reviews

Simone St. James has written another winner. I found this novel hard to put down. I don't normally read ghost stories, but the author's expert skill of weaving a mystery into the book, and the sense of place she develops keep me coming back for more. This talented author is worth reading, and you will become attached to her characters as well. Congratulations Ms. St. James!
An enjoyable read, but still fell short for my taste in the murder-mystery genre. Set in the 1920s, it tells the story of Jillian and her quest for answers on her uncle's death in the small town of Rothewell. She finds out later on that not only her uncle's rented house is haunted, but also the town, as well. The first half of the book was pretty scary to me, but lost its effect on the latter part when the story shifted on some revelations about Jillian's uncle and what really happened to him. I like a touch of romance when reading stories like these, but I didn't find any chemistry between Jillian and Inspector Merriken. There were moments when I felt like Merriken was taking advantage of Jillian to help with the progress of the investigation, and I didn't like how easy it was Merriken to redeem himself in the end. Still, I didn't regret reading it.
I love Simone St. James's stories being set in post ww1. I constantly googled to learn more about it since its so easily forgotten compared to ww2.

On an average day, a young Oxford college student finds out her uncle has died. Jillian is then thrust into her uncles world of ghost hunting in the small seaside inlet town of Rothewell. While she may not be a believer, she soon has experiences that make her one.

On top of the ghost hunting, theres also the possibility that her uncles death wasnt an accident but murder. Jillian now, with the help of Scotland Yard and few locals, begins to piece together life in the small town before and after ww1 and how that brought her uncle BACK to this town!

Again.. Love Simone St. James and am reading ALL of her books!
After reading and loving Lost Among the Living I was (as see above) a bit disappointed in the others....but this one was a real winner. Similar formula, a real ghost--but a pretty good one--set in England after WW1, of course. This time the young protagonist is not an orphan (well, spoiler alert, maybe) but quite well off and a student at Oxford. But she does get to meet her incredibly broad shouldered, brilliant, handsome war-damaged hunk. Can't remember if he has blue eyes..oh, he must) Oh! sorry, I'm not being fair. It is a wonderful page turner and great distracting diversion so needed 4 days before the election.........Very well written and a good, researched description of an interesting part of England and life at that time.

Examples of her writing style he book begins My uncle Toby died of a broken neck in the autumn of 1924 just as I was starting the Michaelmas term at Oxford. I was pulled from the back of the lecture hall by a pimpled assistant in thick Mary Jane's and an ill-fitting skirt who hissed that I had a confidential summons and must go to the administrative office at once. She even led me there, though it was just across the quad, so agog was she at the mystery of it.

The woods ended at a long sweep of beach, rocky, dark sanded, and wet, battered by relentless water in a bay that curved like a large perfect shell. Through the mouth of the bay we could see the open expanse of white-capped ocean; inside the bay the water surged choppily, like a bowl of water that was being gently sloshed.
